Mortal - Ted Dekker and Tosca Lee

Their goal is to bring him to power; but Saric has raised an army of corpses more dead and evil than the Mortals thought possible, and their one goal is to defeat the Mortals and kill the boy who threatens order. One boy’s blood can save the world. For one boy, a thousand Mortals would give up their lives—for love, peace, joy, happiness…and a world that is not controlled by fear and order. But Johnathan knows that he must reign in a way that none of the Mortals will understand…until he brings life to a dead world.

Fans of both Ted Dekker and Tosca Lee will be very impressed with the collaboration. The Books of Mortals is both Ted and Tosca at their best. Very few collaborating authors can form a story that is so perfect that it is almost impossible to believe that two people were writing it. Yet, fans will see what they know and love from their favorite author. Ted’s fast-paced, adrenaline-packed writing style with constant twists to keep the reader absorbed in the story has met Tosca’s beautiful prose and natural ability to form a story that is unforgettable. If you loved the Circle, you will love The Books of Mortals! If you loved Demon by Tosca Lee, you will love The Books of Mortals! Basically, if you love either of these authors, you will love this unique story that you will not soon forget. If you love both authors already, get ready for the ride of your lifetime.

Downfall - Terri Blackstock

Emily Covington has been sober for two years and life for the Covingtons is almost back to normal; but Barbara is still afraid that her daughter will relapse. Emily is still dealing with the rumors about her past; and what she wants most is just to be out of the spotlight. But when she finds a bomb under her car and people start being murdered, Emily exposes a connection that has all eyes on her once again. After hearing a conversation about an Alfred Hitchcock movie and a plan for double murder, Emily is now a suspect. Will she be able to prove her innocence? Or will these events lead to her downfall?

“Downfall” is the much-anticipated ending to Terri Blackstock’s Intervention series. In Intervention, we were introduced to the Covingtons. The intensity of the story, Terri’s fast-paced writing style, and the realistic characters made the first two novels impossible to put down; so I was sure “Downfall” would be great. It definitely did not disappoint! Once again, Terri has written a novel that can be classified as “up-all-night fiction”. “Downfall” has all of the intensity of “Intervention” and “Vicious Cycle” and more. I hung on every word and had already guessed one of the twists, only to be surprised by yet another twist!

On top of that intensity, Terri has an exceptional writing style that has just enough detail to put the reader into the story, but does not go into unnecessary detail that takes up space. This makes the novel very fast-paced and intense and never lets go of the reader’s attention.

Terri did an excellent job at continuing to develop the characters that had already become so real to the readers. Emily has made a complete turn-around and has managed to stay sober for two years; so the Emily that we see in “Downfall” is completely different than the Emily from the first two books. Tension arises as the reader wonders if Emily will eventually relapse—especially since she is being accused of murder.

Fans of Terri Blackstock will be very pleased with her ending to the “Intervention” series; and with the whole series now available, it is a great time for new readers to begin this great series!

A Walk Across the Sun - Corban Addison

Seventeen-year-old Ahalya and fifteen-year-old Sita have known only the privileged and sheltered life that their father has given them in India; but when a tsunami destroys everything they’ve ever known and claims the lives of their parents, the girls are forced to seek shelter. When they ask an old friend of their father’s for help, they are sold from one man to another in the sex and drug trades; and soon they can’t help but believe there is no way to survive.

Thomas Clarke’s entire world consists of his ex-wife and his recently deceased infant daughter. When his career begins to go downhill, Thomas makes a last-minute decision to join a non-profit organization. Thomas is shocked to discover the hidden reality of girls being sold for sex. When he learns of Ahalya and Sita, he makes it his personal mission to rescue him. But Thomas will soon realize that he is about to encounter the most gruesome and heartbreaking of crimes and the most evil of men; and once he starts this mission, there’s no turning back.

“A Walk Across the Sun” is a beautiful story that casts a light on the evils of human trafficking. This novel is another step to the sex trade not being hidden in the shadows. Throughout the novel, your heart will break for the girls who must endure such torment every day. Tears will wet the pages as you see a cop pass by a truck full of girls or when a passerby glances and ignores what he has just seen because he believes it isn’t his business. “A Walk Across the Sun” will make you angry at an evil ignored.

With a truth that shines through the story, the characters become so much more than just characters to the reader. They seem real as the reader turns page after page in hopes for their survival.

"A Walk Across the Sun" is Corban Addison's first novel; so I was amazed at the beautiful way the story flowed. From the first word, I was hooked; and it was the exceptional prose that grabbed my attention and refused to let go. There was just enough detail to put me in the novel and make the characters seem real, without being excessive.

Corban Addison has penned a masterpiece of fiction. With a beautiful writing style that immediately catches your attention, characters that steal your heart, a story that is not easily forgotten, and a message that will get the attention of a comfortable world, “A Walk Across the Sun” will not disappoint. Fiction readers will love the story and the truth that shines through; and non-fiction readers are sure to view this book differently from any other fiction book they may have read as they encounter the reality that the story depicts. I highly recommend this book to every reader!

Last Light - Terri Blackstock

Planes have fallen out of the sky. Cars have stopped moving. Watches and clocks have stopped ticking; and the world as everyone knows it, is coming to an end. Deni Branning just wants to plan her dream wedding. Her family just wants to keep living the life they have grown accustomed to; but all of that changes when a world that is run by technology, no longer has any of it. Now, Deni is stuck in Birmingham, Alabama with her family; and all she wants is to get back to her fiancé in Washington DC. But will the outage bring out the worst in people? What will the people who live in this quiet neighborhood do when they discover that one of their own is a killer?

Terri Blackstock begins the Restoration series with “Last Light”. When I first picked up the book, I was surprised that I did not find it to be as fast-paced as the “Intervention” series. Rather than reading “Last Light” in less than a day (which is something I have grown accustomed to when reading Terri’s up-all-night fiction), it took me several days; but by the middle of the book, I was far from disappointed. I was desperate to know more! “Last Light” is a great beginning to the series! I can’t imagine what waits in the next three books!

Terri’s character development is truly exceptional! She has gained my attention with the way she creates characters who are real to the reader. Never once do you feel like you are just reading a story. The characters are real people; and they often feel like friends. The first half of the novel was mostly character development; and that made it very slow-paced; however, by the middle of the book, I knew that every second of character development was necessary for what was coming. By then, I had analyzed every character because I felt like I knew them. I spent so much time analyzing their every action, just trying to identify the killer. It wasn’t until the middle of the story that I realized that Terri had done her job well by spending so much time on character development. The book would not have been as powerful; and the ending would not have been as intense if I did not feel a strong connection to the characters.

“Last Light” puts a lot of things into perspective. How much do we love our stuff? What are we willing to do to keep it? The outage brought out the worst in a lot of people; and it really emphasized the biblical teachings of sharing what we have.

While it is not as fast-paced as the Intervention series, “Last Light” is an amazing story! Fans of thriller, suspense, mystery, and Christian novels will love this novel!

Catching Fire - Suzanne Collins

This review is for the sequel to "The Hunger Games". If you have not read "The Hunger Games", you will not want to read this review yet.

In “Catching Fire”—the second installment of “The Hunger Games” trilogy—Katniss and Peeta have returned home after being named the victors of the 74th annual Hunger Games. Picking up where “The Hunger Games” left off, both Katniss and Peeta are traumatized by what they endured in the Games, and trying to figure out how to move on with life; but before they can even attempt to move on, they have to go on their “victor’s tour” through all of the districts, and face the families of the dead tributes. What Katniss doesn’t realize, however, is that she is being watched by the entire country, and every move she makes and every word that comes from her mouth seems to spark rebellion among the people. After an uprising against the capitol begins, Katniss is informed that she—along with her family and friends—will be held responsible; leaving her to decide whether she supports the uprising or wants it to end for the sake of her family. As she tries to promote peace among the districts, it seems like nothing she does is enough. The question of what the Capitol intends to do continues to haunt her; but the answer she gets is nothing she could have imagined.

I didn’t think it was possible after “The Hunger Games”; but Suzanne Collins somehow managed to deliver a story with equal—if not more—intensity than the first novel! With unexpected twists occurring all throughout the story, the reader can’t help but be completely lost from reality and ready to scream at any given moment.

The plot of this second book blew me away! The intense anticipation of what the Capitol was planning, the revelation of their evil intentions, and the race with Katniss and Peeta as they try to survive, had me in complete shock; and all of the plot twists ensured that I had no idea what to expect next! This novel is sure to have you screaming after every other chapter.

Collins is a master at developing characters. They seemed like old friends in “The Hunger Games” and I could feel every emotion; but in “Catching Fire”, I felt their pain more than ever. With exceptional detail and that perfect first person point of view that fits the story so well, Collins lets the reader in on every thought and emotion that Katniss feels; and connects the reader to Peeta much more than in “The Hunger Games”. The love triangle between Katniss, Peeta, and Gale is well developed and becomes much more intense in “Catching Fire” as Katniss tries to decide between the two guys who she cares about the most. Although it seems like every young adult novel has to include a love triangle now days, the added touch of being able to feel what Katniss is feeling made this one much better than others.

New fans of “The Hunger Games” will definitely not be disappointed with “Catching Fire”. The sequel is everything “The Hunger Games” was—if not more—and if you want to keep your sanity, I would advise that you already have the third book, “Mockingjay” on hand; because waiting is not an option.

The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

In Panem, the country that rose up from the ashes of what was formerly known as North America, the government believes the only way to keep the districts in line is by forcing 24 teenagers to fight to the death each year.  While some look for a reason to embrace the competition and raise their children up for the Hunger Games, others look on in fear at the reminder that they are completely at the mercy of the Capitol.  With her name in the pot over twenty times, 16-year-old Katniss fears that this may be the year she is chosen for the gruesome and fatal Hunger Games; but when her 12-year-old sister’s name is chosen, Katniss puts all fear aside to stand and fight in her place.  Katniss is shocked when her district partner—who she also must kill to survive—happens to be the boy who helped her years ago.  With the rule that there can only be one winner haunting the 24 tributes, there is no doubt that the worst must be done to survive; but will they be able to show the Capitol that they are not just pawns in their horrible game? And when love and survival come face to face, which one will win the battle?

The Hunger Games is possibly the last book you would want to judge by any summary you may read on the back of the book, Amazon, or any other retailer website.  The idea of a “fight to the death” game between 24 teenagers seems repulsive; and as you read, you will most definitely be outraged at the deaths of each character.  Your emotions will run wild.  You’ll laugh and cry; and sometimes you’ll want to throw the book against the wall.  Still, in the end, you only want more.

From the first page, the reader can’t help but be completely taken captive by this book.  Suzanne Collins has written a fast-paced novel that immediately becomes real to the reader and is impossible to put down!  No, that’s not the same “impossible to put down” that you read about thrillers on a regular basis. This is the intense, adrenaline-producing, edge-of-your-seat, nothing else exists, “I won’t sleep until I finish this book” kind of “impossible to put down”.  From beginning to end, I did not let the story out of my sight.  The idea of doing anything else seemed impossible with all the possibilities of what could happen next!  The story played out in my head as if it were real—as if it had actually happened. 

To add to the intensity of the plot, Suzanne Collin’s writing style is mesmerizing and sure to hold your attention from beginning to end!  Written in present tense and first-person point of view from the eyes of Katniss, the reader feels as if he or she is experiencing everything with the character. 

The characters are exceptional!  Several of them start to feel like old friends; and your heart breaks for the horror of what they must do to survive.  As I read, I couldn’t help but talk about them as if they were completely real any time I had a conversation with someone about the book!  Because that’s what they are to the reader!  Even the worst savages of the teenagers become people who you can’t help but sympathize with.  As a matter of fact, throughout the entire novel, I could not be truly angry at any of the teenagers, no matter who they killed.  Instead, I could only be angry at the Capitol for forcing the teenagers to kill each other to survive; and all any reader wants is for them to defy the Capitol and prove that they are not pieces to their game.

This young adult novel is certainly not a book that only teenagers will enjoy.  The writing style is beautiful without child-like word choices; and the fast-paced plot will produce adrenaline in readers of all ages and leave them begging for more.  When I finished reading, I couldn’t think of any part of “The Hunger Games” that I did not find to be exceptional.  The second and third installments of the series are “Catching Fire” and “Mockingjay”; and the first movie is scheduled to release in March of 2012.  This story is not one that will be easily forgotten!

Vicious Cycle - Terri Blackstock

In “Intervention”, Terri Blackstock introduced us to Barbara, Emily, and Lance Covington. After the death of Barbara’s husband and the father of her two children, Emily and Lance, Emily turned to drugs to mask her pain. Her downhill spiral tore the family apart until Barbara decided that it may be her last chance to save her daughter. If you want to read more about “Intervention”, you can read my review for that as well!
“Vicious Cycle”, the second book in the Intervention series puts the reader back into the Covington family just in time to see Lance in trouble. A good kid who has made it his mission to help people who were addicts like his sister, Lance ends up in jail and in the middle of a human trafficking deal after trying to help a pregnant teenage drug addict. Desperate to save her son, Barbara calls in Kent, the man who saved her daughter a year earlier, and had won her heart along the way. Will Barbara, Kent, and Emily be able to save Lance from the consequences of a crime he didn’t commit, while also saving a teenage drug addict and her newborn baby?
“Intervention” introduced me to the unbelievable, fast-paced fiction by Terri Blackstock! Fiction that takes your breath away while keeping you up all night just to finish the race! That’s what I feel like when I pick up one of Terri Blackstock’s books! “Vicious Cycle” was my second of her books, and the stories that she likes to call “up-all-night fiction” definitely live up to their name for me! I read both books in under 24 hours each! When I pick one up, everything else gets pushed aside as I start a new adventure that I can not back away from until I see it to completion! Terri’s writing style couldn’t be better! She provides enough detail to make the reader feel like he or she is in the story, without adding excess detail that the reader just wants to skip over! This definitely contributes to my inability to put her books down!
Terri Blackstock is exceptional when it comes to building believable characters that touch the reader’s heart. Through both “Intervention” and “Vicious Cycle”, I felt like I had stepped out of reality and into the world of the Covingtons. I felt as if I was trying to solve their dilemma with them rather than just sitting on my bed, propped against some pillows, and drinking a cup of coffee. I enjoyed reading a novel that focused on Lance, since I absolutely love his character! Lance is sure to touch every reader’s heart with his strong faith, fun personality, and willingness to do whatever it takes to help someone in need.
From the first words of “Intervention”, I have felt a strong connection to this story; but never in my wildest dreams did I expect what “Vicious Cycle” would bring! Terri Blackstock unveiled the horrible and evil reality of human trafficking—a subject that is often considered taboo; and a subject that is very significant to my life. I am a firm believer that we must live by Ephesians 5:11-13 and expose the evil of the world by casting light on it; and I expect to see that in my writing and the stories I read.
In case you can’t tell, I believe that Terri Blackstock has written an exceptional story with this series. This is a story that is perfect for readers of various ages—teenagers to grandparents; and is sure to touch the hearts of Christian, grandparent, mother, father, daughter, or son everywhere! The next installment of the series, Downfall, is scheduled for release in February of 2012, and I couldn’t be anticipating it more!

The Canary List - Sigmund Brouwer

Hidden deep within the Vatican archives is a list—a list that contains both revelation and truth, as well as the power to destroy. For once the truth is revealed, the Catholic Church would be destroyed.
Jaimie Piper’s life has been everything but normal. Hunted by evil and darkness, Jaimie spent most of the past twelve years confused, until a psychiatrist and a priest promised to help; but the one day that her psychiatrist does not answer her call, Jaimie runs to the only other person she feels she can trust—her teacher, Crockett Grey. Crockett Grey is definitely not prepared to help the twelve year old girl who shows up at his door, since his only plans were to get drunk and pass through the anniversary of his daughter’s death; but once Jaimie chose him, there was no turning back. Crockett soon discovers that he is part of a plot that must somehow involve the girl; but what he doesn’t realize, is that he is actually a part of a conspiracy that has been long hidden…by the Vatican. Trying to clear his name of the various charges that have been placed against him, Crockett searches for answers; but the answer he finds will alter everything he once believed.
It seems like more and more authors are wanting to write suspense stories that reveal a conspiracy of sorts that has been hidden by the Catholic Church. I must say that usually these stories are not well researched and just not very good; however, as a fan of “The Da’Vinci Code” by Dan Brown, I will pick one up on occasion. “The Canary List” is especially intriguing since the main character, Jaimie, is supposedly being hunted by evil, and can only keep that evil at bay with a magnetic bracelet. This story had me constantly wanting to know what was going to happen next; and putting it down was simply not an option. Complete with several distractions, twists, and turns that confuse you into believing that you’ve been wrong from the very beginning, Sigmund Brouwer is a master of suspense. It seemed like I had a new idea of what was going on and how the book would end after every other chapter; and then I couldn’t believe what I was reading as I read the ending.
Satanism in the Vatican—the ultimate conspiracy that could change the world; that is what Sigmund Brouwer presents in this story that is sure to keep you up all night wanting more.
I was definitely not prepared for what I would get when I opened “The Canary List”; but from the very first sentence, I was caught completely off-guard and my emotions ran wild as I escaped into a story which I wasn’t sure I wanted to be involved in; nevertheless, my fascination got the best of me and I went along for the ride. I must warn you though that the summary does not provide justice for this story. I couldn’t believe what I was reading once I had read the first sentence. Shaking with tears running down my face as I stared at something so real and gripping on the first page, I knew this wouldn’t just be another story for me. The opening chapter grabs you and refuses to let go.
While the characters can be interesting at times, they are nowhere near as developed as the storyline. Brouwer clearly has the ability to pen an excellent story that keeps the reader coming back; however, his characters just seem like people who are also along for the ride. I wouldn’t say they are characters that will not soon be forgotten; however, I was very intrigued with Jaimie, since I was able to relate to a lot of her emotions. I determined from the very beginning that Jaimie was basically me ten years ago; with the exception that I was not being hunted by evil. Her emotions were very believable and accurate for a girl with her past and the current situation she still faces.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of suspense! “The Canary List” certainly does not disappoint; and at the end, you will only want more.

Top 12 Favorite Stories

Top 12 Favorite Stories of all time (Because I just couldn’t do 10)
Okay so no matter how hard I tried, I could not make this list consist of any less than 12 stories. I just couldn’t do it. I didn’t know which to cut out. That being said, the last few are not necessarily in order; since it was a tie between those and I couldn’t decide which ones I liked more.

This is nothing more than my opinion based on the books that I have read, and is not the result of a vote. Out of the hundreds of stories that I have read, these stories stood out above them all.

1.) The Books of History Chronicles – Ted Dekker
I’ve read a lot of stories; but none that can be compared to the 15 books that make up the Books of History Chronicles by Ted Dekker. These books primarily include “The Circle”, “The Paradise Novels” and “The Lost Books”; however, “Skin” and “House” are also included in the BoHC. Through the BoHC, Ted Dekker introduced me to a world I could have never dreamed of; but now can’t imagine my life without! He taught me the joy that comes from diving deep into Elyon’s lake—a joy that continues to this day as I imagine what is in the future after this life. Through story, Ted Dekker has given me opportunities to reflect on the true life that can only come with death. Ted Dekker took me to Other Earth. I could hear the laughter as Elyon played with His people and turned the world upside down; and I cried when a member of the Horde discovered the life that came from death. I stood strong and was ready to fight; but was also ready to bow down and lay down my sword when the time came. There has never been a story that has had such an impact on my life. That is why the BoHC are (and probably always will be) number 1 on my list; because my life has been forever changed by this story.

Elyon’s Strength. Never break the Circle.

2.) Gone With the Wind – Margaret Mitchell
I remember when I first discovered this magnificent story. To say I was amazed would be an understatement. I sat there in awe as my imagination ran wild about the enchanting world; because to me, it was a world of its own. The discovery of this story sparked my own personal fantasy world that, to this day, still takes my breath away. I frequently dream of the big puffy dresses and the southern gentlemen; the grand staircases and beautiful plantations…the windows that were taller than me (yes I think about the windows too) sigh. I hate it when someone tells me they’ve either never seen or never watched the entire thing. They are missing the most beautiful (real) world imaginable. (Had to specify “real” because of Other Earth ^_^)

3.) Immanuel’s Veins – Ted Dekker
At the peak of the world’s interest in vampires, thanks to Twilight, Ted Dekker stepped forward with a story that would change lives. Immanuel’s Veins is the only Dekker novel that I put at the same level as the Circle. This is definitely not “just another vampire book”; despite what many believed when they first discovered that Ted’s new book would have vampire characters. Not much to say here. It’s just amazing. Go read it!


4.) Chronicles of Narnia – C.S. Lewis
C.S. Lewis is, without a doubt, a master story-teller. In the world of fantasy, Narnia most definitely battles with Other Earth (at least in my mind).

5.) Lord of the Rings – Tolkien
Although I’ve never actually read the LotR books, I chose this position for Lord of the Rings based on having read the Hobbit, what I’ve seen of the movies, and knowing the story very well. I love this story and I can’t wait to enter this world through the books when I finally get the chance to read them! Not to mention, if it weren’t for Tolkien, the only impression I would have of elves would be “Santa’s tiny helpers”; and naturally dwarves would only make me think of “Snow White”. Tolkien set a very strong foundation for the fantasy that would come after his story!

6.) Heaven’s Wager – Ted Dekker
This is another one of those stories that changed my life, by exposing the world that waits for me when I am given the gift of leaving this world and going to Heaven and the new earth to be with Elyon for eternity. I desperately want to read this story again.

7.) Redeeming Love – Francine Rivers
How far will Elyon go for a single soul? A modern day interpretation of the story of Hosea, “Redeeming Love” answers that exact question in the form of a story that can not be forgotten. My heart broke as I was reminded of the love that He has for us. This story is sure to overwhelm you with His presence and love.

8.) Safely Home – Randy Alcorn
“Safely Home” had me crying throughout the entire story. Randy Alcorn exposes the truth of the persecuted church in China (as well as the rest of the world) in this beautiful and heartbreaking story that will leave you wanting to do nothing more than worship our Savior.

9.) A Lasting Impression – Tamera Alexander
I’ve already explained how mesmerized I am with the Old South. There’s no stopping me as I enter into this world through a new story. Tamera Alexander captured the time period perfectly! She definitely did her research! Her incredible detail and writing style took me to the Old South again for the first time since “Gone With the Wind”!

10.) Pirates of the Carribean
Most people are aware that I am not one to watch TV; and I rarely watch movies; but Pirates of the Carribean is one of only a few exceptions. I was very upset when I heard they would be ending the series after the third movie; but I knew that was impossible since this is a much loved story to many people. Sure enough, they released a fourth movie ☺

11.) LOST
As you can probably already see, there are only two stories on this list that are not books; but I felt that LOST definitely deserved a spot on the list since this story still amazes me (as well as anyone else who has seen it).

12.) Harry Potter – J.K. Rowling
Some people may say that Harry Potter doesn’t belong on a “Top 10 Best Stories of All Time” list; however I must disagree. J.K. Rowling created a world that we will probably never forget; and while there are many stand-alone books that I liked more than a few of the HP books, a series usually has more of an effect on me. This is one series that has left a legacy.

Intervention - Terri Blackstock

Barbara Covington has been left to pick up the pieces and help her son and daughter to move on with life; but that has proven to be difficult, since three years later, her daughter Emily began a downhill spiral with drug abuse. One thing led to another, and after a year of substance abuse, Emily was in the worst state she could possibly be in. Barbara only saw two options: either let her daughter end up dead or in jail, or exhaust her last chance to get Emily in rehab, where she could start over. Barbara arranges for an interventionist to come and convince Emily to go to rehab, and then fly her across the country to the rehab center; but when the interventionist is found dead on the flight back to the rehab center and Emily is nowhere to be found, a nightmare that Barbara could have never imagined has begun. It is soon apparent that she and her son may be the only ones who believe that Emily is not a killer; and Barbara is in a race to find her daughter, who may be experiencing a nightmare of her own.
“Intervention” is a page-turning thriller that will not disappoint! In the course of 24 hours, I searched for every single detail, praying that Emily Covington was innocent of the murder that she was accused of. Through the heartbreaking first half and the fast-paced search for a killer that took place in the second half of the novel, I was unable to pull myself out of the story. Next thing I knew, it was less than 24 hours later; and despite the fact that I have midterms starting tomorrow, I had read the entire novel. I now understand why Terri Blackstock calls her books “Up All Night” fiction; since I haven’t read a book that quickly since I started grad school.
The characters start to feel like your own family as you ride through their nightmare with them. Terri Blackstock is excellent at character development! Every moment with Barbara broke my heart—from reading through Emily’s journals to her insistence that her daughter was innocent. Lance may have been young and innocent (which was a great addition to the story), but his persistence and humor throughout the story gave me times when I actually found myself laughing just as tears had started to fall down my face. I enjoyed reading about Kent, especially as he wrestled with his own questions about God; however, I look forward to seeing him more in the next novel, since I’m sure he will be much more personally involved in the story than he was in “Intervention”.
As Emily is broken into more and smaller pieces, Terri Blackstock doesn’t fail to remind the reader of the brokenness that comes before one truly finds salvation; and I cried with Emily when she reached “bottom” as it is constantly referred to throughout the novel. Reading this story broke me again for that moment in my life when I finally realized that I was not my own. It hurts; it’s ugly; it’s dirty; and as you cry out to the only One who can save you, all of a sudden, you don’t feel alone anymore. The reader experiences this with Emily Covington through her journey in the novel “Intervention”. When the novel opens, the reader believes that she couldn’t be in any worse of a state of mind; but of course, God is not done with her yet; and a whole other journey still awaits her.
This novel is the first of a series of novels called the “Intervention” series. The second novel, “Vicious Cycle”, was published earlier this year; and I will be reading it as soon as I have it in my hands from the publisher! The third book, “Downfall” is scheduled to be released in February of 2012. From the first book, I already know this is an excellent series for any thriller reader, parent, or teenager! I anxiously await the next novel!

A Lasting Impression - Tamera Alexander

In the past 6 months, Claire Laurent has lost her mother, her father, her home, and the only work she has ever known—the work of a forger. A talented artist, Claire has been forced to forge famous paintings for years; but now that her father is dead, she must start over, and make a new life for herself. Forced to flee New Orleans out of fear that the men who killed her father would be looking for her, Claire settles in Nashville, with no idea what she will do to survive; but within a day, Claire manages to land a prestigious interview with the richest woman in Tennessee, at the Belmont Mansion.
Setting her novel in the late 1860’s, as the South continues to recover from its devastating defeat, Tamera Alexander truly captures the enchanting time period. As someone who is fascinated with the beauty of the Old South and reconstruction period and has frequently dreamed of a world of big puffy dresses, southern gentlemen, old southern mansions, grand staircases, and windows taller than me, I was captivated by “A Lasting Impression”. I have not read a story set during this time period that has caught my attention this much since “Gone With the Wind”, which happens to be my favorite story of all time.
The detail and imagery in “A Lasting Impression” is exceptional—from the descriptions of the various art to the perfect details of old southern culture! Tamera Alexander has a beautiful writing style that flows and makes you feel as if you have actually landed in the most beautiful time period that ever existed! I have never read a book with such detail! I love escapism; and as an avid reader of fantasy, thrillers, and other various fiction, I find that escape as I frantically search for every clue to solve a murder, dive deep into Elyon’s lake, take the train to Hogwarts, or get inside the head of a deranged serial killer. The escape that I found in “A Lasting Impression” was very unique as I landed in a time-period that I’ve always dreamed of. Tamera Alexander sent me there.
The characters could not have been better! I connected with Claire, who could be sweet and quiet at times but really came out of her shell as the story progressed, becoming lively and spirited as she slowly began to believe more in herself. I found myself laughing out loud and smiling at Sutton’s southern gentleman qualities; and Adelicia was intriguing and I never knew what to expect next from her!
This is the first book that I’ve ever read by Tamera Alexander and I’m already anticipating reading it again very soon, along with as many other books I can get of hers! Her engaging writing style and captivating imagery and detail, complementing a beautiful story written from a Christian perspective is refreshing and beautiful and has definitely made me a huge fan! As a matter of fact, I dare to say that “A Lasting Impression” has made it onto my top 5 favorite stories of all time! I hope there will be many other Belmont Mansion novels!

One Step Away - Eric Wilson

Brett and Sara have lived a life of counting pennies to get through each day; wondering when the Lord would see fit to provide a raise to the people who remained faithful to Him.  They believed that the Lord would provide abundance to those who were faithful in their lives and giving; and they had given more than what hurt; but they still struggled through each day.  Little did they know, Satan was planning their destruction with a large sum of money.  When a patient who Sara had been helping for years dies, he leaves his entire 6 million dollar fortune to her.  Will Brett and Sara remain true to the Lord with everything at their fingertips?  Will what they believe to be the ultimate provision actually be their destruction?

            The Bible says several times, in different ways, that money is the root of all evil.  It can lead to a person’s eternal destruction.  One Step Away is encouraging for Christians everywhere who have wondered why God has not provided for them in the way that they have wished.  I was able to relate to the Vreeland family to the point where it actually hurt me every time someone said they were not faithful enough; because if they were, God would have given them an abundance.  The Word says that those who are faithful with a little will be put in charge of a lot; but some of the most faithful Christians are struggling.  There are Christians who have lost everything and are being persecuted in other countries.  There are starving families who remain faithful even when they don’t get to eat for days.  The story was a reminder that Elyon has a reason for everything.  We can never understand His reasons; but He always provides what He sees fit to provide at the time.  He is faithful and He knows what He is doing; but those of us who struggle are often considered to be less of Christians than those who are not struggling.  This couldn’t be less true.   

            It was great to read a story about a normal every day family who was trying to live a life worthy of the gospel they carry.  There was nothing fake about these characters.  They are real to the reader.  It was also a reminder of Satan’s activity in the world.  We are being constantly tested to prove our faith.  Will we be able to pass the test?

            “One Step Away” did not disappoint!  If you are looking for a book that will challenge your faith and encourage you to build your armor against the enemy, this book is for you.  If you are looking for an amazing page-turner, this book is for you.  If you want a book that will keep you anxious to know what happens next, you have to read this book!  I’ve never read a book by Eric Wilson before; but I am sure to read more in the future!  I can’t wait to read his next book “Two Seconds Late”.   Both “One Step Away” and “Two Seconds Late” are part of his “By the Numbers” series.  In the “By the Numbers” series, Eric Wilson is writing modern-day stories that relate to old Biblical stories.  In “One Step Away”, Eric explored the story of Job.  In “Two Seconds Late”, he will explore Esther.  I am very excited about the next book!  I hope to see many more fans of Eric Wilson soon!

"The Sparrow's Cry"

Hey everyone!
I'm currently 11,000 words into my current novel, "The Sparrow's Cry".  I'm taking advantage of NaNoWriMo and taking the incentive to write...a lot! I've written 11,000 words in less than 4 days!  It's a blast and I wouldn't trade it for anything right now!  Be on the look out for more reviews in a few weeks since I'm dedicating a good portion of my time to my writing.  I have several books that I've committed to review in the next couple months! 

For those of you who are interested, here's a brief (and very rough) summary of "The Sparrow's Cry"!  I'm not very good at summaries because I have to try so hard not to give anything away so please forgive me for my lack of a great and catchy summary!  I'll keep you updated as the novel progresses!

3 years ago, Joleigh woke up in the middle of an abandoned road after having been held hostage with her sister by a cult for 7 years. She was troubled by the broken memories and the fact that she knew they still had her sister; and she swore to find them and her sister; but she had so many holes in her memory because of a very heinous and gruesome 7 years, that she didn't know where to start.
3 years later, Joleigh wakes up to her house on fire and barely escapes with her mother. She wakes up in the hospital to find out that her Mom is in a coma and they don't expect her to come out of it. Broken-hearted after losing the only person she had left, Joleigh is determined to find and kill the men who have her sister (who she also believes to have started the fire). During her mission, Joleigh meets an older Christian woman, who also has a painful past, and the younger man who works for her and finds that maybe she can begin to trust again. She and the man are attracted to each other and he pursues her but she struggles to open up; but will the traumas of her past come back to destroy everything just when she begins to open up? Will Joleigh ever be the same after killing even the most evil of people? In the meantime, Joleigh's horrible nightmares change to dreams of a supernatural battle. Are her dreams pointing her in the right direction? Will they be enough to reveal her sister? Or will they just bring back everything that her mind was determined to hide?

The Baker's Wife - Erin Healy

            Only a few months ago, Geoff was a Pastor and his wife was the ideal pastor’s wife with a very unique and special gift that has connected her to many people; but then, when the church is stirred to fury by a rumor spread by an elder, Geoff is banned from the church and from ever seeking a position as a pastor in another church.  Now Geoff, Audrey, and their son Ed have to start over.  Turning to their love of baking, they open a bakery; but only a few months later, while they are still in pain and trying to heal from the horrible lie that destroyed everything they once had, Audrey and Ed are in an accident.  Trying to drive in the fog that never seems to break during this time of year, Audrey hits something that she discovers to be the scooter that belongs to the wife of the church elder who destroyed her husband’s career.  What makes everything worse is that there is blood everywhere—and the blood is confirmed to belong to his wife…but where is Jack’s wife?  She has disappeared and Jack, the church elder, is determined that Audrey has everything to do with her disappearance.  In desperation, Jack takes Geoff, Ed, and 3 others as his hostages in the bakery—with the promise that he will start killing if Audrey does not tell the truth and bring his wife back to him.  Will Audrey be able to use the unique gift that she doesn’t always appreciate to find Jack’s wife before he destroys everything she has left?

            “The Baker’s Wife” is a beautiful story with characters that find a place in the heart of each reader.  In a country where 95% of the population claim to be Christian, but only about 1/3 of those people actually live the life of a follower of Christ, it is refreshing to read about a family that shows Christ in every aspect of their lives—even though they are fictional characters.  Audrey is the perfect example of a godly woman and an image for women to aspire to match in their daily lives.  All Christians like to say they trust God with everything, but very few trust God like Geoff, who lives in full submission and humility, aware of his inability to understand the ways of God and fix matters that only God can repair.  Ed is the typical teenager who tries to follow Christ but still makes typical teenage mistakes—except that he has faith that can move mountains and he lives a life of repentance.  How many teenagers do we see who live that kind of lifestyle?  These beautiful god-fearing characters are not the only characters that the reader will not soon forget, however, since the reader is also introduced to characters who are seriously disturbed.  I really enjoyed analyzing Jack, who is the first person to quote scripture in every other sentence, but creeps the reader out when he quotes scripture since his theology is very off, he lacks a true understanding of the words that he speaks, and he takes drastic ungodly measures to bring about what he sees as justice.  As a strong law-enforcement officer who emphasizes works, Jack is a great demonstration of the danger of legalism; but at the same time, his character reminds the reader of the beauty of grace!

            While “The Baker’s Wife” was very predictable and didn’t present a lot of surprises, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and look forward to reading more by Erin Healy in the future!  It was a beautiful and page-turning story that I couldn’t put down!  I ended up reading the majority of the book in 1 day because once I got about a third of the way through, I couldn’t put it down and just kept reading until I was finished!  I found that the majority of my interest was captured by the characters who were so fascinating!  As a psychology grad student, I was thoroughly entertained with the task of analyzing every single one of them (haha!). This is a story that I will not soon forget! 4 stars!

"Waking Hours" - Lis Wiehl

            Tommy and Dani are re-united after nearly 12 years apart after their graduation from High School—where Dani was able to resist Tommy’s charms and the connection she felt at the homecoming dance.  Now, 12 years later, they partner to help solve a gruesome and tragic crime—the shocking and gory murder of a local high school girl.  The only suspects are other teenagers who were at a party with the girl; however, none of them claim to have known her well and none of them can remember what happened that night.  It becomes apparent to Dani and Tommy that there is more to this case than meets the eye and that supernatural and spiritual connections can no longer be considered impossible.  One thing they do know is that it would take a very disturbed and evil person to do what was done to Julie Leonard.  Is it possible that the killer isn’t even human?  The case forces Dani and Tommy to evaluate everything they believe in and face the possibility that the murder that they are trying to solve may have a demonic connection to the unseen.

            As I began reading “Waking Hours”, I felt like the story that Lis Wiehl was most likely going for was very interesting; however, it didn’t take me long to realize that she may have not been able to accomplish all of her ideas for this story.  While the concept of demonic activity in relations to a murder was interesting, and her portrayal of the unseen was extremely creepy and, at many points, definitely scared me to the point to where I nearly stopped reading and strongly considered writing a review stating that I was incapable of finishing the book, it seemed as if, overall, nothing ever really happened throughout the story.  The plot was weak and the ending was borderline intense and was over in an instant.  I expected that with a story about demonic influences on a human, that the ending would be almost too much for me to handle; but as soon as the “intense” ending started, it was over within 2 pages.  I think the story had a lot of potential if written by the right author; however, I think it may have been a little much for Lis Wiehl. 

            I did love the characters of Dani and Tommy.  As a matter of fact, it was their characters that kept me reading and gave me the will to finish the book even though it creeped me out.  Tommy is every girl’s dream and I found that with every page, I wished more and more that he was real haha.  The growing relationship between Dani and Tommy is very sweet but I wouldn’t recommend it to someone who likes a good love story because that is just on the side.  Someone who favors love stories would be more likely to not be able to handle the creepiness and the demonic aspects of the story.

            Also, as a psychology student who has strongly considered forensic psychology several times throughout my education, I really enjoyed Dani’s character as a forensic psychologist.  If you like crime-solving stories and tv-shows that only focus on the solving of a crime but don’t really go anywhere, then this is your kind of book.  The crime-solving aspect was very interesting and it kept me wanting to know what happened next enough to keep me motivated to read; however, if you are looking for a well-developed plot, you won’t find it in “Waking Hours”. 

            Overall, I’d say I’d give the book 3 stars.  I give it that because I did LOVE the characters of Dani and Tommy and I enjoyed the crime-solving—since I enjoy a couple of more comical crime-solving stories and tv-shows such as “The Mentalist” and “Psych”; and I could see myself as possibly reading the rest of the series for the characters and crime-solving; however, mainly it’s because I try not to start a series and not finish it; so it’s possible that you may see reviews for the rest of the series as they are released.  Also, the last page (I can’t provide information without a spoiler), only added more to the possibilities of the story line.  Can Lis Wiehl salvage this story and do everything that she has most likely imagined for the story?

There are many authors much higher on my “to-read” list for now; so if I ever do pick up another book for this series by Lis Wiehl, hopefully she will have found a way to strengthen the plot.

Vigilante - Robin Parrish

Nobody would ever understand the nightmare that Nolan Gray lived for two years while he was held hostage during the war. It was a nightmare that nobody could even imagine—something so horrible that he wished he could just forget; but unlike other trauma victims, Nolan was highly trained in almost every type of combat. As a matter of fact, nobody on earth was trained as he was; so he pushed back all of the memories, and took action. For the past ten years, he has been working on a plan—a plan that would put a stop to the evil that was destroying New York City.  After ten years of intense preparation, Nolan became the hope that New York had been waiting for; but at what cost? Nolan becomes obsessed with finding the man who is responsible for the worst evil in New York City; but is the man he is searching the only man who can stand in his way? Will confrontations with evil bring his past back to destroy him? Will he have to sacrifice everything he values to destroy the evil of New York? Is it even possible that the cost of destroying the biggest crime boss of New York would be everything that Nolan has ever loved and valued? And of course, will Nolan’s faith be destroyed by the Vigilante mission he has taken?

With his unique skills and training, and high tech gadgets created for his mission, Nolan Gray gives off the superhero persona that makes this book very unique and keeps you hanging on every word.  Unlike actual superhero stories, Nolan is not truly a superhero; but to the people of New York, he becomes one as he seems to appear or fly out of nowhere just when help is needed most. I absolutely loved this aspect of the book and I feel like it is something that really makes the book stand out among other stories of this type.

I have heard from many people that they felt like the story would be too similar to "The Priest's Graveyard". To respond to that belief, I would say that although the two books have similar qualities since both characters come from a tragic past and feel as if they can personally defeat evil, the books also have many differences, including the superhero aspect of "Vigilante" and the difference in the ways that Nolan and Danny handle their "victims". In "The Priest's Graveyard", Danny killed his victims if they were not willing to admit to their wrongs and repent; whereas in "Vigilante", Nolan has a very strong (though controversial) faith, and doesn't begin with the thought of killing any of his victims, but instead exposing them so that they can be punished and the streets of New York can be free of their influence and destruction.

(I promise the following tangent has a point; but if you really just want to skip this then go down to the last 2 paragraphs)
Initially, I chose “Vigilante” for my next review because it had a quote by my favorite author (and author of "The Priest's Graveyard", Ted Dekker on the front: “Parrish’s stories are sure to shape fiction for years to come.” I was searching for another book that would be of a similar caliber of the adrenaline producing thrillers and the unforgettable fantasy that I have grown accustomed to as a fan of Ted Dekker. It is obvious to anyone who knows me, that I have a passion for discovering and exposing truth. This passion is something that I have always been interested in; but it became so much stronger when I began reading books by Ted Dekker. My entire life changed when I was introduced to his books because, until then, I had never read a book that was so real—a book that exposed evil for what it really was, and didn’t try to make it into something easier on the eye. Considering my past, it is very important to me that people do not become desensitized to the horrible realities in this world.

I have become obsessed with books that expose the war that goes on around us every moment of every day. I search for truth in books—often a truth that is ignored by many of the typical sheltered Americans because it is too gruesome for them to accept as reality.

            As a reader, a writer, and a student, I try to live by a particular quote that I always keep in mind.

“We Christian writers must paint evil with the blackest of brushes, not to sow fear, but to call out the monsters to be scattered by our light. If Satan cloaks himself as an angel of white, intent on deceiving the world, any attempt on our parts to minimize evil is only complicit with his strategy... Turn to the light; don’t fear the shadows it creates.”

Evil is darker than the darkest you can imagine. It can't be cleaned up and made pretty for the books you read or the movies you watch. It's real...intense...terrifying. Our world is a battle between a gruesome enemy and the Savior who defends us; and we all know that battles are never pretty; but if we ignore it, we never truly understand the power of Yeshua on the cross and His authority to destroy the darkest of darkness. We can’t ignore evil; we have to expose it; and we can’t fear evil, but instead we must destroy it in His name.

Even with the hundreds of books I have read throughout my life, I have never been able to find an author who portrayed truth through story as accurately as Ted Dekker.  That was until I read “Vigilante” by Robin Parrish. This was the first book by Robin Parrish that I have read. To say that I was amazed would be an understatement. Robin Parrish peels back the layer of comfort that many Americans live behind so that they do not have to accept the true terror of evil. Robin Parrish exposes evil for what it really is—gruesome, terrifying, dirty, and sickening. I must warn anyone who is considering this book that it is definitely not for someone who would like to continue living a sheltered life, unaware of what is going on in the world—both the beautiful and good and the ugly and sickening. There were several times toward the end of “Vigilante” that I had to put down the book, take some deep breathes and calm down before continuing. The intensity and the feeling of truth in the story makes you feel like you are actually IN the story—as if you were actually the main character and the story was your story.  The story literally became my story since I felt such a connection to Nolan because of his suppression of the events of his past--a past too terrible for him to live with.  I appreciated being able to read about a character who I could understand--and since the story felt so real, a character that represented a person who I felt could understand me (I can think of only 1 group of people who will understand what I just said there so don't feel bad if that made no sense ^_^).

"Vigilante" also provokes a lot of thought about what and, more importantly, Who can truly defeat the heart of evil. Evil is not something that can be destroyed by destroying 1 evil man, even though Nolan believes that this man is solely responsible for all of the problems in the city of New York. While Vasko (the crime boss) is clearly being used by the enemy to cause a lot of turmoil in New York, the real issue of New York is the problem of sin.

Sometimes I laughed; or I cried; or I felt like I was going to pass out from dizziness from the overload of emotions and the fast-paced plot.  “Vigilante” has earned a spot on my list of favorite books of all time and I am sure to be watching for any future books by Robin Parrish!

The Great Books Reader - John Mark Reynolds

I write.  I create ideas…stories…things.  I bring life to characters and I give them a purpose…a story.  I am passionate and my characters reveal my heart.  I hide in my dungeon to escape into a story that is not my own…to discover something new.

I read.  I dive deep into Elyon’s red waters in Other Earth.  I’ve been locked in prison with a persecuted Chinese Christian.  I’ve experienced a world where humans have been stripped of every emotion except for fear.  A demon has told me his story.

I study.  I explore the mind in the study of Psychology and I study and debate Theology with other students. 

I search.  I search for truth, knowledge, and understanding.  Unfortunately, I have found that truth is often buried over time.  It is buried with the people who made it their lives to discover that truth—a truth that was too easily forgotten.  I have dreamed of debating theology with Thomas Aquinas or John Calvin, of exploring the mind of Homer to discover one man’s unique reality, of studying with Socrates, of arguing with Freud.  To be in the company of some of the most influential writers, philosophers, psychologists, and theologians of all time is something I can only imagine; but here’s a thought: we, as Christians, will one day be in the presence of some of these influential people—at least the ones who stood for a common purpose: Elyon.  We will be a part of the great debate; a great conversation.

“The Great Books Reader” is a great addition to any library; and I am certain that you will find yourself reading, studying and exploring the book over and over again.  It is an excellent book for someone who has a lot of time to spend lost in thought since every word grabs at your attention; but it is also perfect for someone who has very little time and needs something that can be read slowly.  As a grad student, I enjoyed the feeling of being lost in a conversation about an author and a work, but then being able to put the book down at the completion of that particular debate, only to pick it up again later for the next debate!

The Keeper - Ted Dekker & Tosca Lee

Safely Home - Randy Alcorn

At some point you've been introduced to John 15:18-27, 2 Timothy 3:12, Acts 14:22, and many other verses that literally boast about the persecutions that we will face on the path to Heaven.  Maybe you heard it in church one day, or someone mentioned it when a friend walked out of your life because of your faith, or maybe you read through it one day and stopped to thank God that it wasn't a reality for you, and probably never would be...

Meet Ben Fielding.  He used to claim Christianity, until a bumpy road resulted in him questioning and rejecting everything he used to believe.  All Ben knows now is a lonely but wealthy life; he has the perfect job and all the money he could need, but he finds himself constantly wanting more.  He regularly reviews his goals of becoming CEO of the corporation he works for and having even more money, even though he admits to having no idea what he would use that money for.  As a man who fired his own cousin for being open about his faith at work,  Ben still is blind to persecution of any kind.  That is until he goes to China to stay with his former college roommate.  Believing that this trip will be no different than his many trips to China (with the exception that he would not be staying in a 5-star hotel), Ben is surprised as he begins to discover that the China that is being exposed to him is nothing even remotely like the horrible reality that is hidden from Americans. 

The people of America like to be comfortable.  Not only do they not expect to be persecuted, but they don't want to hear the horrible realities that are going on all around them.  Topics such as imprisonment or execution of Christians, sex-traffiking, and other gruesome subjects are considered taboo, and shouldn't be talked about; but the reality is that it all exists, no matter how much we choose to ignore it.  What's worse, is that even the so called "Church" has become de-sensitized to taboo realities.  The "Church" wants to accept the desirable things of the Word, but skim past the parts that talk about suffering.  The "Church" wants a god who surrenders to their will. 

"Safely Home" by Randy Alcorn is a huge wake-up call for anyone who would claim to be a follower of Christ.  It has been a long time since I read a story so beautiful, that did not have a huge twist at the end.  While the story is fiction, it exposes the truth of persecution not only in China, but all over the world.  We must learn to accept this truth, while also embracing it as the path to our eternity, rather than ignoring it and pretending that the path to Heaven is a smooth ride!  We must ask ourselves what we can do for those who are already facing persecution!  Prayer is truly powerful but we must display our faith through our actions!  We must become an army for Yeshua; we must be willing to fight!  Nobody gets left behind...nobody gets forgotten...nobody gets ignored; and as an army under a single commander, for one purpose, we are all willing to die for the name of Yeshua; for we know that what the world calls dying, is actually the gateway to an eternal physical communion with our Creator and Savior!
